Herman Tilke has designed many F1 tracks

The organisers of the Indian Grand Prix have officially named the new complex ahead of its inaugural race in October.

The new 5.14-kilometre Herman Tilke designed track will be known as the Buddh International Circuit.

The name is derived from the Gautam Budh Nagar district, near Greater Noida, which the track is situated in. It is around 40 kilometres fromNew Delhi.

The track is still under construction and is hoping to be granted FIA approval in August. Organisers are keen to avoid the Korean Grand Prix fiasco of last year where parts of the track were finished days before the event.

Tilke has designed several current race-tracks – includingMalaysia,ChinaandTurkey– with mixed reviews.

Indiahas never held a Formula 1 race before but the sport’s popularity is rising. Narain Karthikeyan became the first Indian driver in 2005 withJordan–now with Hispania – and ForceIndiawere the first Indian team to take to the grid in 2007.
